Flea Control Canberra
Flea Control Canberra & Queanbeyan
Flea, the common name for the order Siphonaptera, includes 2,500 species of small flightless insects that survive as external parasites of mammals and birds. Fleas live by consuming blood, or hematophagy, from their hosts. Adult fleas grow to about 3 mm (0.12 in) long, are usually brown, and have bodies that are “flattened” sideways or narrow, enabling them to move through their host’s fur or feathers. They lack wings, but have strong claws preventing them from being dislodged, mouthparts adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood, and hind legs extremely well adapted for jumping. They are able to leap a distance of some 50 times their body length, a feat second only to jumps made by another group of insects, the superfamily of froghoppers. Flea larvae are worm-like with no limbs; they have chewing mouthparts and feed on organic debris left on their host’s skin.
What is our process for flea control?
The main treatment is our end of lease 3 bedroom treatment. This is because many people need to get this service at the end of their lease. We provide the most cost-effective end of lease flea removal services in Canberra and Queanbeyan. We can also conduct a regular flea removal service and have done so in the past.
One of our technicians will come round and check that the area is ready to be sprayed (carpets vacuumed, floors mopped, etc). We will spray the area using our specialised machines to ensure the correct amount of flea treatment has been applied to kill any fleas and eggs left after your pet. At the end you will get documents supporting the treatment.
Why are City Pest Control Services so affordable?
We operate on low overheads and have very streamlined processes. We also offer packages for pest removal so we try to hit two (or many) birds with one stone, as much as possible. Our termite, rat, and flea control services are the lowest you will find in the area without compromising on quality or expertise. For comprehensive yet affordable flea pest control in Canberra & Queanbeyan, we are an excellent choice.
How serious is a flea infestation?
Extremely serious. Like bed bugs, fleas are parasites that live off of warm blood – such as humans and their pets. Fleas have the ability to spread diseases, and are said to be the cause of the 14th century bubonic plague, killing over 200 million people. In Australia, fleas can transmit tapeworms from cats and dogs to humans. They are also known to spread typhus disease.
What are the characteristics of fleas?
There are 4 stages in the lifecycle of a flea – egg, larva, pupa, adult. Like bed bugs, their bite contains anticoagulants so that the blood keeps flowing. The adults can survive for several months without feeding. Fleas are most commonly found in cats and dogs. They are not found on humans anymore due to an increase in hygiene standards.
How does City Pest Control treat flea infestations?
First, we recommend you do your part in terms of cleaning your pet and vacuuming the home thoroughly. Fleas will be concentrated in areas where household pets rest. Next, you can call us to arrange a treatment. We will apply a low toxicity agent to your pets and the environment so no fleas can survive. We may need to treat the garden and garage as well. In some instances, rodents might be the cause of a flea infestation. In this case, City Pest Control will conduct rodent and flea control simultaneously.
Is flea control dangerous or toxic?
We need to assess your household first to see the extent of the infestation and which areas need to be sprayed. However, we take great care to select the least toxic option. You may need to vacate the premises or certain rooms for 4 hours or longer. But this is a small price to pay for total flea eradication! After the time period has passed, you can undertake a second rigorous clean of your home to remove the pesticide, if you desire. But the fleas will already be taken care of.
Can I treat a flea infestation myself?
You can, though it is not recommended, especially if the infestation is severe. You will need to target all areas of your house simultaneously, or else the fleas will keep coming back. Fleas are tiny, and it’s very difficult to get all of them (including eggs) simply by cleaning and vacuuming. Even if you get 99.9% of them, the entire family will be back within 6 weeks or so. With fleas, like many other pests, nothing less than a complete eradication will do.
